Scientists at Harvard University have claimed that the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis (MS) may be caused by the herpes virus.
Their study suggests that it may come from infection with Epstein-Barr, a herpes virus that causes infectious mononucleosis.
Epstein-Barr virus is highly contagious through saliva and can cause fatigue, fever, rash and swollen glands.
Scientists think it may also set up a latent, lifelong infection that can be a major cause of multiple sclerosis.
The Independent Research report, published Thursday, January 13 in the journal Science, looked at 955 young adults who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during active service in the military.
Compared to samples from 10 million military members, they found a 32-fold increased risk of MS after being infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. No other virus increased the risk of MS.

Study senior author Alberto Escherio, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard Chan School, said in a press release: "This is a major step forward because it shows that most MS cases are preventable by preventing EBV infection, and This led to the discovery of a treatment for MS that could target EBV."
However, Epstein-Barr will be difficult to prevent as it is present in about 95% of adults.
Mr Escherio said the delay between contracting the virus and developing MS symptoms may be due to repeated stimulation of the immune system when the latent virus is reactivated.
