ISLAMABAD: The Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday sought details of recovery made directly and indirectly by the National Accountability Bureau in the last four years.
NAB Chairman Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal did not attend the meeting as he has been tested positive for COVID-19. Rana Tanveer Hussain presided over the meeting. NAB gave a briefing to the committee regarding the details of recovery made by it. Javed Iqbal was supposed to give the briefing but DG NAB Headquarters Hussain Ahmed informed the committee that the NAB president was ready to attend the meeting but could not attend as he has been tested positive for COVID-19. Hussain Ahmed informed the committee that till October 2021, Rs 821.573 billion has been recovered by the NAB. He told the committee that the indirect recovery was Rs 500.650 billion, while the direct receipts are Rs 76.952 billion, out of which Rs 50.0406 billion has been recovered. petition deal while Rs 26.546 billion has been recovered through voluntary repayment.
DG NAB said that the highest recovery of Rs 294 billion was from Rawalpindi and the lowest Rs 51 crore was recovered from Balochistan while Rs 84.17 billion was from Lahore, Rs 88.28 billion from Karachi, Rs 3.43 billion from KP and Rs 4.37 billion from Multan. He told the committee that on a year-on-year basis, the NAB recorded a maximum of Rs 313.18 billion in 2020, Rs 122.40 billion in 2019 and Rs 26 billion in 2021. DG NAB could not respond to repeated queries. PAC member Ayaz Sadiq said those who argued and made a voluntary withdrawal are the same. He said that the NAB should give the details of the stolen property, otherwise the real picture of NAB recovery will not come before the committee.
PAC member Senator Shibli Faraz said action can be taken on receipt of complaint from any party and NAB president can also take suo motu cognizance. PAC member Riyaz Fatyana said that interrogation takes many years. There should be a time limit for them.
Rana Tanveer said that he has seen that the least corruption has happened in Balochistan. PAC member Khawaja Asif remarked that Balochistan gets less funds. Rana Tanveer said: “We have recovered Rs 537 billion in three years and how much amount has been recovered by NAB in the last four years. Naveed Qamar said that it should be explained why Khurshid Shah was kept in jail for two years without any evidence. Rana Tanveer asked why NAB did not brainstorm that a person has already spent two years in jail and if evidence is not found against anyone, he should be granted bail. The PAC chairman said that the NAB should tell in the next meeting where the sterling pounds recovered from Malik Riaz are.
During the review of NAB's audit objections, Rana Tanveer directed that the audit objections should be regularized by the Finance Department through the National Assembly within a month as per the instructions of the PAC.
