"Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it's now," Kohli writes on Twitter
New Delhi: India's Virat Kohli on Saturday announced that he is stepping down as Test captain, a day after the three-match series loss to South Africa.
"At some stage everything has to come to a halt and as India's Test captain, it is now," he posted on Twitter after being under pressure for seven years.
The 33-year-old Kohli, who stepped down as T20 captain after the World Cup loss and then lost his one-day job, took over from MS Dhoni in 2017 to lead India across formats.
"The journey has had many ups and downs, but there has never been a lack of effort or faith," Kohli said.
"I've always believed in giving my 120 percent everything I do, and if I can't do it, I know it's not the right thing to do.
"I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest towards my team," he said.
India lost the final match by seven wickets 2-1 in Cape Town on Friday, with Kohli blaming the team's poor batting for the loss.
Kohli is part of the KL Rahul-led ODI squad in the absence of injured Rohit Sharma, which will play three matches in South Africa from January 19.
