Went to Murri for humanity, not as a minister: Sheikh Rashid


 Rawalpindi: Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on Sunday that he died after the tragic incident on humanitarian grounds, not because he was a minister.


The minister was referring to the Muri tragedy in which 23 people lost their lives to carbon monoxide poisoning as they were trapped in their vehicles due to heavy snowfall.


Speaking to reporters during an inspection of the under-construction Mother and Child Hospital (M&CH) in Rawalpindi, the minister said had he not died to monitor the situation there, the death toll would have gone up to 30 instead of 23. reaches 40.


Rashid said that since people were not listening to the police and were trying to enter the hill station by force, the government had to call in the rangers in Muri.


He said that if the Rangers had not been called, 500 more vehicles would have entered Muri and it could have caused a bigger accident.


“I went to Muri, I ordered the evacuation of over 700 people who were stuck in their cars,” he claimed.


The minister also highlighted the country's political climate and ruled out the possibility of an in-house change to the National Assembly proposed by the opposition and said that Prime Minister Imran Khan would complete the constitutional term.


He said the long march of the opposition did not pose any threat to the PTI-led government, adding that the government would present a people-friendly budget in the next financial year.


On the remarks of Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif, Rashid said Imran Khan was not a scary dream but a sweet dream for him. The minister said he had never seen a politician like Nawaz Sharif, who left the country for personal interests.


"If the opposition moves a no-confidence motion against PM Imran Khan, his fate will be similar to what he experienced in passing the finance bill," Rashid said, adding that 12 members of the opposition were from the national were absent. Assembly during the last session
