Will Smith Tells Venus and Serena Williams 'The American Dream'
Will Smith praises Venus and Serena Williams in his acceptance speech at the Critics' Choice Awards.
On Sunday, the Pursuit of Happiness star won Best Actor at the 2022 Critics' Choice Awards for his performance in King Richard.
The win followed wins in the same category at the 2022 SAG Awards and the 2022 BAFTA Awards. (He has also been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.)
"I'm here tonight with Venus and Serena [Williams] and their sister Isha," Smith, 53, said in her acceptance speech. "And I really want to say to all of you, thank you for handing me your story. What you were able to do, and what your family was able to do, inspired everyone in this room, in this country, and everyone . Worldwide."
Smith produced King Richard and also starred in sports drama as Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Serena, 40, and Venus, 41. The film chronicles the sisters' journey to become professional athletes.
"You all define the American dream," Smith addressed the family in his speech. "You represent the best of what you expect from this world and this country."
Smith spoke of Oracene Price, the mother of the Williams sisters, "who played a really cool role for many years."
"And I love that we were able to show what your mom did to help build and mold and shape your family, and to show the world the power of faith, the power of unity, the power of family, Be able to show strength. Discipline," he said.
Smith then shouted out to Aunjaneu Ellis, who played Orcine in the film: "In the same way that I think your father didn't do it alone, it would be unfair for me to accept this [award] without accepting Aunjaneu Ellis." Thank you, Anjanyu."
